Scintillation tutorial 2025

Scintillation affects all compact radio sources like pulsars, fast radio bursts, and to some degree even active galactic nuclei. Even though this tutorial is based on my pulsar perspective, understanding it is useful for studying the other compact sources, too.

The tutorial will have two parts:

  1. Interactively explore the basic principles of scintillation.
  2. Learn how to locate a scattering screen from real data.

For the second half of the tutorial we will use downsized real data. It is recommended to download it before the tutorial here. Parts of the code used in the second part make use of ctypes, which do not work in ipython (jupyter notebook) and on MacOS. Make sure to have a Linux terminal available. You will need

The slides and github repositories of the tutorials will be uploaded in the coming days.
